Reviews for The Legend of Tessie Agana

So much to enjoy about this book! Heartfelt and encouraging.

The author takes us by the hand into a charming world – an immigrant starlet marries ambitious doctor and raises 9 kids in the heart of Americana. It seems like fiction. This book was lovingly researched, and it both entertains and educates the reader (on Filipino culture). The author thoughtfully develops her unique characters and poses important questions about mental health, parenting, and priorities. A call to discover and honor the lives of our parents, and in return learn something about ourselves.

Memorable Read

An unforgettable journey through the Agana Jao family. A beautiful tribute to a woman who struggled through numerous struggles and the great legacy she is leaving behind. Great family! Great story! Great memories! Thank you Mylene! Thank you for reminding all of us to treasure every second!

A wonderful trip through time

I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. It is an easy read and I couldn’t put it down. It offers something for any type of reading you prefer (romance, comedy, history, etc). The writing is real and honest. I so enjoyed the journey of Tessa Agana from movie star in Philippines to mother and wife in Indiana. It gave me a lot of think about afterwards and I am sure it will do the same for you.

Just Wonderful!

Mylene will take you on a journey that is so eloquently and respectfully written. The story of her family is both fascinating and inspiring. Mylene is not afraid to touch on sensitive subjects such as anxiety and depression – and she does it in a beautiful way which allows the reader an opportunity to self-evaluate. A must read!

Engaging read

This was an engaging read with some interesting Filipino cultural history. It was also quite introspective. Which is pretty incredible for such a quick read! It’s worth checking out!

More About ‘The Legend of Tessie Agana’

Richardson’s mother and grandmother – Tessie Agana and Linda Estrella, respectively – were the Philippines’ iconic mother/daughter film star duo of the 1950s, starring in 40 films collectively and winning the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.

Tessie was affectionately deemed “The Nation’s Little Sweetheart” and known as the “Shirley Temple of the Philippines.” With unsparing truth, Richardson offers the first intimate portrait of her mother, whose early fame and exposure to the public eye led to dark shadows that impacted her entire life.
